E&R KPN2000 not sewing

My daughter got her sewing machine out after not using it for a few months and it only seems to sew the first few stitches.
It always picks up the bobbin thread.
It sometimes randomly does a stitch here and there but almost always does the first few.
we have tried stitch size and tension but nothing helps.
can any of you shed any light onto this for us?
